AS in England and Wales, so in Scotland, hauliers are pressing for higher rates with varying success; reactions range from blank refusals to acceptance of figures well over the 5 per cent originally proposed by the Road Haulage Association.

Mr. William Pollock, managing director of the Musselburgh business that bears his name, said: "I'm afraid we are on a sticky wicket. Some of our customers are refusing to pay anything extra." The Association, he thought, had handled the whole thing very badly. The industry needed this increase. The firm was negotiating with customers but one prospect was that English hauliers offering return-load terms would take work away from Scottish concerns.

Mr. J. Allison jr., director of the large Allison's Transport (Contracts) Ltd.. of Dundee, said that while none of the rate increases they sought was below 5 per cent some for smaller consignments were up to more than 10 per cent. A spokesman for Sutherlands of Peterhead reported success in getting 5 per cent from their larger customers, while some customers who had co-operated in increasing the efficiency of vehicle use were being asked for only 3 per cent. Highland Haulage, Inverness, reported negotiations for rises of 4 to 5 per cent, although some customers were taking the view that no increases were necessary.

Increased rates were more justified than ever before, claimed Mr. W. D. Tucker, proprietor of a small concern at Mid Calder, but he thought the RHA had failed to state its case properly at the meeting with Mr. George Brown. Their failure to take a stand would force some of the smaller men out of business, in his opinion.
