Leyland Motor Corporation, has been seconded to the Ministry of Defence for three months as a special adviser to the Government on the overseas sales of armaments. He is to produce an advisory report before his return to Leyland. Sir Donald said last week that his temporary detachment from Leyland would cause no more disturbance than his occasional export trips, and that the Leyland production lines were already at full capacity.

Mr. Albert Fenton retires today (Friday) as garage manager to Raleigh Industries Ltd., on completion of 50 years' service with the company. His responsibilities for themaintenance of Raleigh transport will be taken over by Mr. C. P. Cooper, who will be designated road transport engineer and continue to be based at the garage, 177 Lenton Boulevard, Nottingham.

Mr. Eric Holt, a director of the Dunlop Rubber Co. Ltd., has been inaugurated as president of the Federation of British Rubber and Allied Manufacturers in place of Mr. David D. Marshall. Mr. Holt has been a vice-president of the Federation since 1963. The new vice-presidents are Mr. Charles C. Hawkins, chairman and managing director of P. B. Cow and Co. Ltd., and Mr. Norman Grimshaw, chairman of Vitafoam Ltd.

The election of Mr. A. R. Dunbar as president of the Institute of Transport for 1965-6 was announced last week; the vice-presidents included Mr. Anthony Bull, member, London Transport Board; Mr. C. A. Dove, general manager, Mersey Docks and Harbour Board; Mr. P. S. Henman, chairman, Transport Development Group Ltd.; Mr. W. M. Little, chairman, Scottish Bus Group Ltd. and Mr. S. W. Raymond, chairman, British Railways Board. Among members elected to the council for 1965-6 are Mr. M. A. Holmes, chairman, London Transport Board; Mr. E. R. Hutchings, area traffic superintendent, BRS Parcels Ltd.; Mr. W. L. Kelly, transport manager, National Coal Board; and Mr. F. K. Pointon, executive, British Electric Traction Co. Ltd.

Mr. E. W. Hardiman has rejoined the board of Esso Petroleum Co. Ltd. as -director and general manager (marketing). Mr. Hardiman resigned from the Esso board in December, 1963, to take up an 18-month assignment as deputy co-ordihator of the world-wide marketing activities of Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey) in New York.

Mr. David N. Everett has taken over in Sussex as US Royal sales representative of The North British Rubber Co. Ltd., whilst Mr. R. Isherwood becomes representative for replacement tyre sales in the north part of Lancashire, Isle of Man and part of Westmorland.

Mr. John Lockett has been appointed controller of group public relations of Simms Motor and Electronics Corporation Ltd. in succession to Mr. Alan Hess, who reaches retiring age at the end of July. Mr. Lockett joined Simms in March this year.

Mr. H. Rigby Smith has been appointed sales engineer (northern area) of the Mercury Truck and Tractor Co. Ltd., of Guildford. He will also represent the associated company, Mercury Airfield Equipment Ltd. Mr. Smith was previously sales engineer with Thomas Green and Son Ltd. For almost 30 years area superintendent at the Doncaster depot of Yorkshire Traction Co, Ltd., Mr. George W. Payne has retired at the age of 68 after some 40 years with the company.

Mr. C. V. L. Lee has been appointed secretary/accountant of the Yorkshire Traction Co. Ltd. in succession to Mr. L. W. A. Gayfer, who is to retire.

A fleet sales representative, Mr. Gilbert Collins, has joined the vehicle refinishes division of Lewis Berger (Great Britain) Ltd., to work from the company's London headquarters.

Mr. P. M. Howlett, as export sales manager of Ferodo Ltd., has been placed in overall charge of three new departments set up by that company dealing respectively with export sales promotion, export service, and overseas development. He is being assisted by Mr. G. R. Lees and Mr. D. R. Way as travelling area managers of the sales promotion department, by Mr. R. West as service department manager, and by Mr. J. F. Newsone as overseas development manager.

Obituary wE regret to record the death of Mr. W. M. Hall, general manager of Liverpool Corporation Passenger Transport since 1948. He died on July 14 at the age of 63, and at the time of his death was also chaigman of the Road Operators' Safety Council. Wilfred Martin Hall's early responsibilities on assuming control at Liverpool (he was deputy from 1946-8) included the conversion from tram to bus operation. He was well qualified for this, having had three years' special training on a London Underground group course providing experience with rail, bus, tram and trolleybus undertakings. He started with the London General Omnibus Co. in 1918 and moved to Glasgow in 1938 as chief automotive engineer, before going on to Liverpool. He was one of the first advocates—in 1962 as MPTA president—of special bus lanes in cities,
