F. and S. Ball Bearings.

We are informed by the Tornio Manufacturing Co. that some remarkable results have recently been cbtained.with vehicles running on F. and S. hall bearings. First in importance is the Grand Prix, in which the winning and second and third Mereed-::s cars were fitted throughout with this make of bearing. In the Alpine trials over 70 per cent, of the competing cars which finished both hill-climb and reliability tests used F. and S. ball bearings ; also, in the English T.T. Race the Minerva cars which won the team prize were fitted with bearings of this make. Anyone who has witnessed the high speeds ntaintained by cars in these important races will readily appreciate the enormous strain which is thrown upon the bearings, and, incidentally, how much success or failure depends upon their reliability.

F. and S. hearings have a world-wide reputation for strength and accuracy which is the result of over 17 years specialization in ball-bearing construction. Messrs. Bowser and Co., of 32, Victoria Street, S.W., have just issued a booklet containing a very interesting list of names of concerns which have installed or ordered their special petrol and oil storage equipments. The list runs to no fewer than seven pages, and we learn that from 80 per cent. to 60 per cent. of the names included have come on to the firm's books during the past. 18 months or thereabouts. Excluding tanks for oil storage, the aggregate capacity of tankage installed for underground petrol storage, including orders in course of execution, amounts to close upon 300,000 gallons, representing an annual handling of something like 33; million gallons. Amongst the more prominent names we notice those of H.M. Office of Works, Great North of Scotland. Great Western, Great Central, and Nmth Stafford Railways, Birmingham M.0.0., Birmingham, Coventry, Dublin, Hastings, Leicester, Liverpool and Manchester Corporation Tramways, together with a large number of motor manufacturing and commercial. motor firms, taxicab companies, and others.

We have had our attention drawn to one of Bowser's new heavy-duty, self-measuring pumps, which has a capacity of five gallons per stroke. This plant has the firm's distinctive accessories, viz., meter, discharge register, filter and regulating gear, by which latter device the quantity delivered can be varied at will from five gallons to two gallons, or even one gallon per stroke.

Amongst other Bowser specialities we would draw attention to the Century pump, in which the hose and operating mechanism are all enclosed in semi-cylindrically-hinged covers of cast-iron. Bowser's specialize in the production of lubricating oil tanks, which they claim present very obvious practical advantages from the point of view of economy.

Preventing Boiler Tubes from Leaking, The obtaining of an efficient and permanent joint between tube and boiler plate has long been a difficult problem experienced by the steam engineer. Several methods have been adupted by boiler makers from time ts: time, including rolling, beading and ferruling with but little success. It has been known that these methods have sometimes failed in consequence of the actual area of contact of the tube with the plate being too small to withstand the severe conditions under which the joint has to work.

The Barron Expanding Ferrule Co., Ltd., as its name implies, has patented a boiler-tube ferrule which, it is claimed, enables the ends of the tube to be expanded from the inside until they press evenly against the whole thickness of the boiler plate. The Barron ferrule is manufactured in two separate parts. The outside member is slotted and tapered on the inside, whilst the inner portion is tapered on the outside. When the ferrules are compressed together the outer one expands, its sides remaining parallel in consequence of the angle of both tapers coinciding. As the length of the ferrules is greater than the thickness of the boiler plate, the expanded tube is provided with a seating over and above the thickness of the plates. We are informed that a number of tests has been carried out on locomotive power boilers over a long period, and that the results fully substantiate the claims made by the maker.
