Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The transport sector remains depressed and is still struggling to pull out of the recession, suggest figures from chartered accountants Deloitte and Touche.

The number of administrative receiverships and administration orders in the transport industry rose during 1996 by nearly 20%—the only sector to report such a rise.

During December three haulage firms went into administration making 56 for the year, increasing from 47 in 1995.

The rise is surprising considering the total number of appointments has fallen dramatically over the past five years with 1,594 reported in 1996, a drop of 25% on the previous year. Every region except Yorkshire mirrored this fall.

The Freight Transport Association is puzzled why road transport is performing badly. A spokesman says: "Road transport is usually a barometer for the economy but it is tough at the moment and some operators can't carry on competing."
