• European haulage firm boss David Lynne was cleared last week of damaging allegations that he colluded with drivers in tachograph fiddling offences. The owner of Surrey-based David Lynne International was acquitted of seven charges alleging fraudulent use of drivers tacho charts in 1994.

But magistrates did convict him of two less serious charges involving journeys when he was personally at the wheel. Along with three of his former drivers he was conditionally discharged for two years. Lynne, 37, of Chase Lane, Haslemere, said that despite his best efforts to check charts he was completely unaware of discrepancies in drivers' hours and distances. Lynne originally faced 26 allegations under the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act, but eventually the prosecution went ahead with only nine. Lynne said: "I am very upset about it and feel a little persecuted. Charges of forgery and counterfeiting are emotive. People associate it with bad cheques and dodgy credit card receipts."
