MA new technology which could revolutionise tyre maintenance has been unveiled by Goodyear.
The company has developed an electronic chip the size of a thumbnail which is embedded in rubber near the beads of the tyre and carries a unique code which identifies the tyre throughout its life. The chip can be read using a small radio receiver and transmitter which has a range of around 60cm. The radio signal powers the chip, so no battery is needed.
All retreads, puncture repairs and inspections can be recorded against the tyre's identity code to build a complete maintenance record. Even if a tyre is swapped between vehicles or axles the transport manager can identify it and check its history.
Trials of the chip have begun with 10 fleets in the US.
