• International livestock hauliers had their best year ever in 1991 — but animal welfare pressure groups are confident that they will slow down export activity by the end of 1992.
Ministry of Agriculture figures released last week show that for the first time ever over a million animals were exported for immediate slaughter. The 1991 figure of 1,186,702 is a 43% increase on 1990's 828,174.
The RSPCA has condemned this and warns that it will push
even harder to have lower journey times imposed on livestock hauliers. The current 24hour international journey limit should be reduced to eight hours, it says.
The RSPCA plans to launch another anti-livestock export campaign in the summer, when EC agriculture ministers are due to study an EC Commission report on the issue. "We are optimistic that we will get better journey times and standards than we presently have," it says.
The Road Haulage Association welcomes news of the bumper year for international hauliers and says: "It shows the live animal business is very important for the UK economy. There is obviously a need for it."
