Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

INCREASED revenue of 10 per cent, is L the target of Coras lompair Eireann,. according to the chairman, Dr. C. S.' Andrews. Speaking in Dublin, he said last year's Transport Act had laid down that the undertaking must pay its waywithin five years, which was a formidable task.

However, to meet the challenge modern methods were being employed to win traffic. The undertaking was being operated more efficiently and more economically, and non-paying serviceswere being dropped. An intensive campaign to sell their services was now under way.

As part of this, a section would be set up to provide a service to industry, freely advising on transport problems. This would probably bring valuable traffic.

Dr. Andrews also announced a new departure in Irish goods transport— package deals with companies to carry all their traffic on an annual contract basis. He thought that in this way lower charges would result in lost traffic being regained. The question of sponsoring a ferry service between Eire -and England was also being examined. .

Discussing the Irish railways, he said the aim was to save as many lines as possible, but the hoard could not be sentimental.

TRIAL PERIOD AT DUBLIN FOR CONTAINERS?

1"HE handling of container traffic at the port of Dublin for a trial period of 12 months is expected by Irish hauliers, following a dispute between the dockers' union and shipping companies. The Eire Labour Courthas suggested that the difficulties might be ironed out over a trial period, and this idea is now being considered by both parties.

The dockers refused to handle containers on the ground that they did away with dock tabour, which would cause redundancy. However, there is a big demand for this service in Ireland; and the Transport Ferry Service, with a terminal at Dublin, are hoping to inaugurate a direct container service between Eire and England.

"PARKING POLICE" IDEA LIKELY TO SPREAD MOTTINGHAMS " parking police"

1 idea will probably be put into operation sometime this year—provided the Home Offiee can overcome the legal tangles in the scheme. Other watch committees • are following the plan closely.

Capt. Althestan Popkess, Nottingham's chief constable, has already received many applications from ex-policemen and other very suitable types."

He envisages a corps of men whose sole job would be to enforce traffic regulations, although they would have no powers of arrest. This would leave the police free to concentrate on more urgent work,
