AT Leeds Assizes, last week, a pedestrian was ordered to pay £5,200 of £8,000 damages awarded to a car passenger who was almost blinded as a result of a road accident. In December, 1956, the driver was giving the plaintiff a lift home when the car hit the pedestrian as he was crossing the road to buy a newspaper.

Mr. Justice Paull did not believe that the pedestrian had looked out for approaching traffic. "I think that a pedestrian who walks straight into the road and who does not see the lights of a car coming along is rather more negligent than a man driving along a road who does not see a pedestrian On the pavement," he said.

U.S.A. TRIP OFFERED TO PROMISING STUDENT rrfoster technical progress in the materials 'handling field, the British Industrial Truck Association are sponsoring a British candidate to attend this year's materials handling course at. Lake Placid, U.S.A.

The student will be taking up an award under the terms of a memorial to the B.1.T.A.'s first president, the late Mr. John M. Morris, which is valued at more tharl £500.

The memorial allows an annual place at a training establishment for someone who may benefit himself and his industry in the materials handling field. Industry and universities have been approached for this year's student.

The course in America is June 14 to 27.

MANCHESTER ROUND ON MAY 3

THE Manchester round of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition is expected to be held on the car park of Old Trafford cricket ground on May 3. Entries will be restricted to 150. The organizer is Mr. A. L. MacFarlane, Town Hall Extension, Manchester, 2.

Cash prizes of £5 5s., £3 is. and £2 2s. will be awarded to contestants taking the first three places in each class. Cups will also be presented.

TANKER COMPANY FINED EINES totalling .£12 were imposed at I Dewsbury last week on C. Schofield and Son. Ltd., Gornersall, when they admitted two cases of failing to ensure that a tanker driver had 10 hours' consecutive rest in 24 and six of failing to see that proper records were kept. They had to pay £5 5s. costs. The driver was fined a total of £6 10s.

P.V.O.A. TO TRY BLACKPOOL

AS an experiment, the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association have decided this year to hold their annual dinner-dance in Blackpool, instead of in London, on October 12. it will coincide with the annual social function usually held in October by the North-Western Area of P,V.O.A.
