Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AWEEKLY meat haul between Manchester and Antwerp was inaugurated on Tuesday by Louis C. Edwards

and Sons (Manchester), Ltd., wholesale meat contractors. One of their vehicles left Manchester with a load, of supplies for the Army depot cold stores around Antwerp docks and it is due back tonight (Friday).

The trip was under the personal supervision of Mr. W. Peel, Edwards' transport manager. His Leyland articulated, outfit with a 12-ton semi-trailer pulled out of Manchester at 11 p.m., reaching Tilbury on Wednesday morning to catch the 3 p.m. ferry. At 7.30 a.m. yesterday it was in Antwerp.

The semi-trailer has Onazote insulation, and the Frigidaire refrigeration equipment can be driven from the mains when the vehicle is static, or by a 200 c.c. twostroke engine when it is on the road. One of the reasons for the outfit reaching Tilbury so well in advance of sailing time was for the trailer to be coupled up to special refrigeration plugs in the vessel.

The Comet tractor made the trip this week, but the company hope that on future occasions they will be able to hire a suitable tractor in Antwerp. Road mileage for the journey was about 450..

The distribution of meat products by Edwards' fleet was fully described in The Commercial Motor, October 31, 1958.

PARIS IN 24 HOURS

WITH lorries and trailers on board, the new commercial vehicle ferry, Empire Shearwater," made its inaugural crossing from Dover to Calais on Monday. The service, operated by European Ferries, 1.td., 78 Leadenhall Street, London, E.C.3, brings a Paris destination within 24 hours of London.

The vessel offers drive-on, drive-off facilities at both termini for all types of lorry, container or trailer. The crossing, three of which will be made in each direction weekly, occupies 2i to 3 hours. A pool of prime movers has been established at Calais and the Calais agents, W. Wingate and Johnston, Ltd., 91 Charterhouse Street, London, E.C.1., can arrange return loads.

Loads up to a gross weight of 60 tons can be carried on the vehicle deck and 10-ton loads on the weather deck.

European Ferries have provided prime movers and staff on both sides of the Channel to assist in loading. At Dover, a Leyland Comet tractor, converted by All Wheel Drive, Ltd., to a 4 x 4 with fifth-wheel coupling and winch, is in use.

MEN OPPOSE DEPOT CLOSURE THROUGH their Union, employees at the Rochdale depot of British Road Services asked Mr. J. McCann, M.P. (Lab., Rochdale), to make representations to the Minister of Transport against its closure tomorrow. With three exceptions, the men had been offered employment at the Bolton depot. They claimed that there was no reason for closing the Rochdale branch. u29
