Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A MOST important application that might have national repercussions. was how the chairman of the North Western Traffic Commissioners, Mr. F. Williamson. described an application on Monday, after heaaing representations by Wallace Arnold Tours, Ltd.

Lancashire United Transport. Ltd., Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., North Western Road Car CO.. ltd., United Automobile Services, Ltd., West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., and Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co., Ltd., wanted to renew their existing express service licence, with new timings but without further modifications, between Newcastle upon Tyne and Liverpool, via Leeds. This would enable passengers to get direct to Llandudno from Leeds without going into Manchester.

In his preliminary submission, Mr. F. F: Marshall, for Wallace Arnold, said that. in 1957 the company had applied for an express service between Leeds and Llandudno. This had been refused on the grounds that there were already adequate facilities and unnecessary competition would result. An appeal had been dismissed.

He thought the application should be republished to show what exactly was involved, and then the railways and other objectors would have the chance to make representations.

Mr. H. Blackhurst, for the Lancashire and Yorkshire operators, said the .public had been enjoying the facilities for some years and saw no reason why they should stop. He thought the chairman should consider all the documents put before him, possibly consult the Yorkshire Commissioners and then say whether or not the application should be republished. Mr. Williamson agreed to do so.

TAX RELIEF SUGGESTIONS

SEVERAL suggestions for taxation changes in the next Budget have been submitted to the Chancellor of the Exchequer by the Federation of British Industries. Among them arc the renioval of purchase tax on materials and equipment used in the course of production —they give commercial vehicle chassis as art example—and the restoration of investment allowances at 15 per cent. for buildings and 30 per cent, for plant and machinery.
