Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

" STURDINESS of construction is essential in the vehicles run by my company," stated Mr. K. 0. A. Ammentorp, a director of Ready Mixed Concrete, Ltd.„ Staines Road, Bedfont, Middlesex. The concern operates some 40 vehicles, of which 22 are of Dodge manufacture.

Each vehicle carries a steel superstructure bolted to the chassis which, together with the conical concrete container, weighs just over 21tons. The design of this unit requires that the chassis members he straight and parallel and fairly high, and this need at once limits the choice of vehicle. The gross weight of a Dodge 5-6-tonner with a 72-cubic-ft. container is approximately 8 tons and in the latest chassis delivered to the concern, the manufacturer has fitted extra frame members.

The lowest available ratio is employed in the rear axle, but drivers have made few complaints about lack of engine

power, although they sometimes wish for a little more speed. On average, the Dodge vehicles return a fuel-consumption rate of 7i m.p.g. Mr. Ammentorp considers this satisfactory, bearing in mind that the power take-off is in operation most of the time, rotating the concrete container to agitate its contents. The major part of the work is carried out near the head office and the average lead is 7-8 miles long.

The drivers appreciate the comfort of the Dodge cab and its freedom from fumes. The concern considers that the vehicles should continue to give satisfaction for their estimated life of 100,000 miles.

• A larger type of container is shortly to be mounted on the chassis. This is 5 cwt, heavier than the units at present used, but Ready Mixed Concrete, Ltd., feels confident that the Dodge vehicles will be capable of withstanding the extra load.
