A N all-Bedford fleet at 51 vehicles is t 'I maintained by George C. Cross, Ltd., Iron Bridge, Uxbridge Road, Southall, Middlesex. Of these, all but three are 5-ton short-wheelbase models with steel bodies and tipping gear by Anthony Hoists. Ltd., and the remainder are 7-tonners

Although the vehicles run on average under 100 miles a day, the work is exceedingly hard and comparatively little mileage is covered on hard ground. The rnanwuvrability of the 5-tonner is appreciated on wet ground and soft going, and great care is taken in maintaining the vehicles.

The transport manager, Mr. Dwyer, Jays great stress on the co-operative attitude shown by the manufacturer. Apart from a visit three times a year from the fleet engineer of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., every difficulty met by the operator is examined carefully by the maker.

If a modification is called for, the vehicle maker gives immediate and serious consideration to the matter. After many years of reconditioning engines at its Iron Bridge headquarters, the company decided to take advantage of the maker's engine exchange system and this has proved extremely successful.

Each vehicle is greased weekly, the fitter responsible lubricating eight to nine vehicles each night of the week. Oil is changed at intervals of 700 or 800 miles and drivers are impressed that no vehicle must be taken on service if the steering or brakes are not fully efficient.

Generally speaking, the Bedford brakes meet with this operator's entire approval and the drivers, too, are confident to take the laden vehicles over the steep hills encountered in the operational area. The fully floating axle of the Bedford is also considered particularly good for sand and ballast

work, because in the event of a halfshaft breaking while the vehicle is on a site, it can be rapidly changed and the vehicle can continue its work.

Apart from a flitch-plate under the cab-mounting points, no modification is found necessary for the work undertaken.
