Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Crawford Maclean, representing Messrs. J. and H. Caskie, of Bowmore, when the Scottish Licensing Authority rejected an application by the firm to run a bus service on the island of Islay after the existing operator, David MacBrayne, Ltd., lodged a similar application.

The firm put its case to the Authority last week and the MacBrayne concern, whose facilities were alleged to be unsuitable, objected. The Authority said that the procedure of favouring the existing operator was recognized and had never been successfully challenged on appeal. He had no hesitation in rejecting the application, but indicated grounds of appeal.

ESSO TO SELL THREE GRADES

TrTHREE grades of petrol will be 1 marketed by the Esso Petroleum Co., Ltd., next month. They will be Esso Extra, Ease Mixture and Esso. High claims are made for the quality of Esso Extra, which will be 4d. a gallon dearer than Pool, and will be produced at Fawley by a combination of the catalytic-cracking and polymerization processes.

Esso Mixture, which will cost 2d. a gallon more than Pool, will, says the company, satisfy those fleet owners who wish to gain many of the benefits of a premium fuel for a more modest outlay. Esso will remain at the same price as Pool.

The other oil companies which have so far announced their intentions say that their premium grades will cost 3d. a gallon more than Pool petrol.
