AA UCH of the west end of I.ondon IV' will be barred to coaches not operating under road service licences during Coronation week, June 1-6. On Coronation day itself, June 2, a wider

• area of central London willte closed to all traffic, including coaches.

The only vehicles which may enter the area on June 2 will be coaches running to and from Victoria Coach Station and the airways terminals. Certain goods vehicles may be allowed to move about the area on that day, and permits, in the form of coloured labels, will be issued by Scotland Yard. The ban will start at midnight on June 1.

The Metropolitan Police have evolved a traffic control scheme drawing on experience gained at the Coronation of 1937. It is expected that a route will be announced for vehicles wishing to cross London, and another special route for vehicles taking passengers to seats at Westminster Abbey will be arranged.

Coach operators are strongly advised by the police not to take private parties into the west end in the week before Coronation week, because stopping and parking facilities may be difficult to find. Certain exemptions to the Coronation week ban may be authorized, including organized visits to the Houses of Parliament.

During the Coronation week, coaches will be banned from an area bounded by Oxford Street, Park Lane, Grosvenor Place, Victoria Street, Whitehall, Strand and Drury Lane.

OBJECTIONS TO WEIGHT RESTRICTION ORDER nalECTIONS to an order made by Argyll County Council restricting the weight of vehicles driven on certain roads in Cowal to 7f tons gross arc to be made to the Ministry of Transport by Bute County Council and Rothesay Town Council. The Ministry's confirmation is required before the Order becomes effective.

The roads are parts of Bute's only link with the mainland and are greatly used by traders and farmers. The limit does not allow many lorries to carry an economic load. The Marquis of Bute, chairman of the Bute Ferry Co., Ltd., has stated that his company would continue to carry vehicles weighing up to 10 tons gross on its boats.

MEETINGS of Conservative Members of Parliament who are interested in transport were called this week to consider the British Transport Commission's application for increased fares.

Resentment has been caused by the fact that the Transport Tribunal's Order which permitted application to be made for an extension, beyond February 2, of time for the submission of objections, has not been made public. Members also object to the new procedure adopted by the B.T.C., which enables an application for increased fares to be made less than 12 months after the earlier one.

REVENUE CAN COVER LEVY

" VEAR by year the Government 1 retains a huge balance over and above its expenditure on the maintenance and construction of roads, this balance being more than sufficient to finance the purposes for which the levy is intended." This point was made in a resolution presented by Mr. Ralph Cropper to Croydon Chamber of Commerce in protest against the levy. The resolution was carried unanimously.
