es £470,451 A LOSS of £470,451 was incurred by rx Ulster Transport Authority in the year ended September 30 last. Net operating revenue showed a deficit of £243,543. The railways worked at a loss of £356,118, which was partly offset by a revenue balance of £45,553 on the road passenger services and of £14,217 on road haulage.

The Authority's fourth annual report complains of a lass of traffic to the increasing number of privately owned lorries and to illegal running for hire or reward by "a certain number of private vehicles." In 1951 there were 20,190 privately owned lorries in Northern Ireland, compared with 15,149 in 1948.

The railways suffered more than the Authority's road transport system from competition by commercial vehicles and. from a decline in trade. Regular traffic in feeding stuff, coal, artificial manure and parcels has been lost to independent road transport, btu other merchandise has been secured.

A merchandise and livestock charges scheme is to be submitted shortly to the Transport Tribunal and will be followed by a passenger charges scheme.

U.T.A. buses carried 112,410 fewer passengers and travelled 636,103 fewer miles than in 1950-51. The number of passengers was 98.5 m. and the mileage, 32.7m. Timetable services were run over 2.600 miles of route. The average taxed fleet was 890, with a maximum of 969 buses.

An average taxed fleet of 667 lorries (maximum, 733) carried 1.46m. tons of goods and '846,143 head of livestock, an increase of 232,599 tons and 145,371 head on the previous year's figure.
