PROPOSALS put forward by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., to the West Midland Licensing Authority to increase fares so as to augment revenue by £308,878 a year, have met with partial approval.

Granting permission for new fares to be introduced on February 21, the Licensing Authority declared that the expected increase in revenue would be reduced by the grant of a lower scale of increases in workmen's fares and other changes which differed from those suggested.

Permission was given to add id. to present adult lid., 2d. and 3d. single fares and to scholars' returns. In respect of the advances proposed on workmen's fares, the Authority has granted increases of id. where 14. was proposed, ld. where lid. and 2d, were suggested and 2d. where 3d. was sought. Permission to withdraw the issue of workmen's return tickets for miners on Sundays was withheld.

A similar decision was expected from the East Midland Licensing Authority.

Ordered to Raise Fares

In the Western Traffic Area, Messrs. H. D. Gourd and Sons. Bishopsteignton, who opposed the application of Devon General Omnibus and Touring Co., Ltd., for higher fares on the ground that they were unnecessary, have been directed to bring their charges up to those now introduced by Devon General. The firm operates one service over ground covered by Devon General.

When North Western Road Car Co., Ltd.. applied recently for permission to advance certain return fares by Id. and 2d., the North Western Licensing Authority, Mr. F. W. Williamson, declared that he was not prepared to abolish concession fares or to alter from 9 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. the time up to which retch tickets are issued. On behalf of the concern, Mr. S. D. Herington declared that since April, 1952, running costs had gone up by £145,432 a year. The increases proposed would augment revenue by an estimated £72,849 a year, or less than half of the increase in costs borne,

30 Objectors

There were 30 objectors to the application, mostly local authorities which sought to prove that the concern should wait another year, in view of its sound financial position, to discover the effect of the last fares increase authorized. It was agreed that the concern had a reserve fund of £800,000. Decision was r,eserved Todmorden Corporation's third application for modified fares in the last two years came before the Yorkshire Licensing Authority recently. Permission to abolish ordinary and workmen's fares was sought. It was A42

estimated that revenue would advance by £18,500 a year, thus enabling the undertaking to produce a surplus 50 per cent. higher than the pre-war profit, although costs had gone up by 150 per cent. Decision was reserved.

Five operators in South Wales have applied for new fares, in some cases this being the fifth application made since the war. South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., and United Welsh Services, Ltd., propose modifications affecting 71 and 56 routes respectively, whilst J. James and Sons, Ltd., Ammanford, proposes new fares on 19 services. The Alan Transport Co., Ltd., and Thomas Bros. (Port Talbot), Ltd., together propose variations affecting 10 services.

Five East Midland Area operators are also proposing fares revisions, The application of East Midland Motor Servica, Ltd., Chesterfield, to add Id. to all existing ordinary and workmen's return fares and to introduce a new scale Of season-ticket rates is similar to

that recently lodged in respect of services in the Yorkshire Area. Forty routes are affected in the new application.

The concern also proposes to bring fares on three routes into line with those charged by Nottingham Corporation and to co-ordinate its charges with those of Mansfield and District Traction Co., Ltd, on six services where sections or stages are common to both concerns.

Mansfield District Traction Co. also proposes to add 1 d_ to all ordinary return fares and id, or Id. to certain workmen's returns on 77 services or sections of routes. Seventy-seven services are affected by the application of Midland General Omnibus Co., Ltd., to add .1d. to all ordinary and workmen's return fares, variations which are identical to those. proposed by Notts and Derbys Traction Co. on eight routes.

Trent Agreement

Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd., has lodged an application to bring charges into line with those of Nottingham Corporation on 24 routes.

A similar co-ordination is proposed by Hants and Dorset Motor Services, Ltd., which seeks to bring fares on 28 routes in the Bournemouth area into line with those recently authorized to the corporation undertaking,

• Advances varying from id. to 8d. on single fares from Id. to 5s. 8id. and florin id. to 7d. on workmen's return tickets from Id. to 4s. and over, are proposed by M. and M. Coaches, Ltd., Kidnerminster. Fifteen services in the Cleobury Mortimer-Ludlow area are affected.
