Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AT the Ministry of War Transport recently, the newly appointed area chairmen of the Hauliers' National Traffic Pool assembled to meet Major G. A. Renwick and the members of the Road Haulage (Operations) Advisory Committee. The chairmen were welcomed by the Director-General of the Ministry, Sir Cyril Hurcomb, and Mr. C. A. Birtchnell, Chief of the Roads Division. The company then adjourned to Frascatis for a luncheon given by the Advisory Committee. ,

Major Renwick, who took the chair, expressed his thanks to the chairmen for attending. A great responsibility rested upon thenrb They had been chosen for their knowledge, reputation and integrity, as well as certain other qualities, so that they could lead the industry in their respective localities. It was their primary task to avoid acrimony and to work in harmony with their opposite numbers on the Ministry side. Above all, they must maintain the confidence and goodwill of their fellow operators. We are here, said Major Renwick, not to. take anything out of the industry, but rather to see if we cannot put something into it.

In the past, opinions held in certain circles about the road-transport industry had not been all that might be desired. He thought that those opinions had now been substantially revised.

If the industry could so arrange its internal politics as to be at all times able to speak to the Government of the day with a united voice, there would be nothing to fear in the future on the score of unfair and restrictive legislation.
