Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Cleaner trucks will mean higher bills, a conference was told last week. Sharon Clancy reports.

EURO-4 TRUCKS ARE set to cost Operators an average of £2,650 per truck more than their Euro-3 equivalents. The increase was highlighted at a Society of Operations Engineers conference last week which aimed to debunk some of the myths surrounding the new emissions standards.

MAN sales and marketing director Dave Cussans quoted an extra £2.250 for a 7.5-tonner. £2,750 for an 18-tonner and £3,000 fora tractor unit.

And Phil Moon, the product marketing manager at Daf Trucks, confirmed that its chassis price would be about 8-10% higher for Euro-4 trucks.

Early fuel-consumption results are mixed. Cussans referred to trials that were run by operator Hanbury Davies in which 430hp tractor units running at 40 tonoc!-. returned 8.8mpg with Euro-3 engines and 8.7mpg with Furo-4.

Howe.ver, John Harvey, fleet manager for Jackson's Bakery, told delegates that his two Euro-4 MANs were using 2.4% more fuel than their Euro-3 stablemates.

Moon admitted that SCR was system more costly than ECM initially. hut added that the payback came in better fuel economy, even taking into account the cost of the AdBlue that was needed by the SCR catalyst.

Operators did hear one piece of good news from AdBlue producer Greechem. Sales director Chris Haynes reported that while running without AdBlue increases NOx em issions, it does not damage the catalyst.
