Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

;BEATER London Council was meeting his week to discuss proposals to restrict he use of drawbar outfits in the capital CM, February 16).

The report to GLC's Planning and ;ommunications Policy Committee ac:nowledges that there are few drawbar ehicles in use at present, but it fears that hey will become more popular if a 44onne maximum weight limit is introluced.

Committee leader Alan Greengross aid: "These huge lorries pose a tremenlous environmental threat to London. 'rankly, they are not welcome. We are tow going to explore ways of banning hese monsters and as part of the exercise krill be consulting with industry on the !ffect of this."

An officers' report to the committee ays that such a ban should be applied rom the outset and not some time after the completion of M25, and that foreign vehicles should be included.

It says that the visual aspect of the vehicles is as significant as any physical damage which they may cause, and that this is a reason for restricting their use.

It says that 44-tonne articulated vehicles carry the same loads, and that industry's only penalty through a roadtrain ban would be that artics are less flexible.

And it adds: "London-based firms would be unable to keep road-trains in London for use in regional or national operations, and the activities of London vehicle repairers might be unfairly restricted."

Officers have asked for committee clearance to meet interested parties to discuss the idea which would apply to all vehicle/trailer combinations which exceed 15.5m.
