BUS OPERATORS will not have to display identification discs on their vehicles. But the name and licence number will have to appear on the side of the vehicle as part of the legal ownership details.

Transport Minister Norman Fowler outlined this change in Government thought during Committee proceedings on the Transport Bill, and promised that later on the Government would seek to withdraw the clause compelling the exhibition of the operator's disc.

The aim was to remove unnecessary bureaucracy, said Mr Fowler. He had consulted the traffic commissioners, and their advice was that the exhibition of operators' discs was unnecessary.

But the proposed change did not please the Opposition. Its spokesman, Albert Booth, said it wanted a stronger disc provision and better control of the particulars displayed on the vehicle, but the proposal was defeated by ten votes to seven.

Psv operators were not all angels, he said. They tried to evade the law. It was a serious offence to run a public service vehicle without having the correct operator's cover.

But now, when the operators' licence was becoming more important, the Government proposed to take away this simple means of identification at a time when it was removing the requirement of a road service licence for express buses.
