AFTER a slight delay gainini insurance acceptance of a nev single fuel tank arrangement South Yorkshire PTE's firs liquid petroleum gas powere4 bus is soon to enter service.
The bus, which is a Leylam Atlantean with SYPTI specification Charles Rot body, is powered by an eight cylinder Rolls-Royce B81G ga engine coupled to a Voitl D851 gearbox with built-it retarder.
It will operate in servic, from the undertaking' Greenland Road depot and wil be fuelled at an adjacent Cabo Gas filling station.
To gain a direct valid corn parison with diesel buses ii service, no obvious outwar, signs will suggest the bus i any different. The gas poweret sign on the side will b removed or covered, and to a intents and purposes the bu will appear standard.
A trial test drive has show that the vehicle is capable c lively acceleration, but nois levels are different, rathe than better, than with a cor ventionally powered Atlan tean.
There is a total absence c vibration at all engine speeds SYPTE will analyse runnin costs and reactions to the triz. period, but will make no cl€ cision until a clear Govern ment policy emerges on futur fossil fuel availability.
To ensure that it is equippe for likely contingencies, th research and development clE partment of the PTE will cor tinue to monitor the develoy ment of electric and othe types of bus and public tram port power systems.
