IN A MOVE to fight lorry thefts in the county, Suffolk Constabulary is conducting surveys to find out more about lorries left unattended at the roadside or in lay-bys.
Ipswich police division, which also covers Felixstowe, made the first survey in a two-week period last November and observed 535 unattended commercial vehicles. These included 303 laden lorries, 134 unladen, 24 dropped trailers, 38 tractive units on their own and one bus. All but 38 of these vehicles were noted at night between 6pm and 6am.
A further survey is to be made using two observations with some hours in between to rule out the vehicles that are parked for a short time only. Suffolk Constabulary says it considers this is "positive crime prevention measures and performing a valuable service".
