BRITISH RAILWAYS' outstanding liabilities for advances under the

Finance Act, 1956, stood at £502,132,800 on March 31 last year. At the same time, outstanding liabilities under the Transport (Railway Finances) Act of 1957 totalled £302,164,134.

These amounts, representing advances to meet capital works and deficits, plus interest accrued, have been presented to Parliament by Sir Edmund Compton, auditor-general, in pursuance of statutory requirements.

The accounts show that during 1960-61 the B.T.C. borrowed £160 million. It was applied in the following way:—

Capital purposes of British Railways: £128.23 m.

Repayment to the Minister of instalments on the principal of earlier borrowings: £15.03 m.

Payment to the Minister, of interest accrued on borrowings for capital pur

poses of British Railways in the year of borrowing and the next three years: £16.74 m.

(It was recently announced that British Railways' net deficit during 1961 was estimated at about £151 million.)

NAR. J. T. TURNER, a national viceIVA chairman of the Road Haulage Association, has recently been appointed a director of Franks Transport (Farnhbrough), Ltd., of Elstead,-Surrey. Mr. Turner is chairman of theR.H.A. traffic committee and chairman of the vehicles committee of the National Road Transport Federation.
