VOLLOWING the recent amendment to..

the regulations regarding excess fuel devices on diesel engines, Kigass, Ltd., and Gardner Engines (Sales), Ltd., have introduced equipment which ensures that the excess fuel device cannot be operated while the vehicle is in motion.

The Kigass. unit has been designed primarily for use in conjunction with the Kigass starting aids but it is equally suitable for use with other priming devices such as the C.A.V. Thermostart. It has a solenoid-operated shut-off valve and is fitted in the fuel supply line of the priming device. The solenoid is wired in parallel with the dynamo-warning light so that the new unit makes the starling aid operable only when the vehicle electrical system is switched on and cuts it out again when normal dynamo charging speed is reached.

The Gardner device consists of a light alloy.housing which is fitted.to the underside of the existing control box with which fuel pumps on all Gardner engines are equipped. The housing contains a compression spring and plunger which earrieS a slotted head at its outer end and an eccentric peg at the inner end.

To operate the device a dust flap is lifted and a screwdriver engaged with the slot in the plunger. The plunger is then pushed in and rotated to engage with the standard cold starting knob. This then lifts the fuel limiting trigger allowing the fuel pump slider bar to move to the position of excess fuel in the normal way. When the screwdriver is released the spring causes the eccentric peg to be disengaged.

The Gardner unit is available as a kit to enable 'operators to convert their engines before the new requirement comes into force on July 1 this year.
