Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A SIX CYLINDERED overhead

valve petrol engine, developing 105 b.h.p. at 3.000 r.p.m. and 215 lb.-ft. torque, has been introduced by the Volvo Co., of Sweden, in a new 6-tonner which weighs 2 cwt. less than its predecessor, the L1300 model. The new engine has aluminium-alloy pistons, in place of the cast-iron pistons formerly used, and a chromium-plated top ring.

Other improvements made in the power ,unit include exhaust valves of lead-resistant chromium-nickel steel, an automatic choke in the Carter downJraught carburetter, hot-spot induction and a pressurized water-cooling system.

In place of the former heavy chassis frame, there is a lighter structure employing twist-resistant cross-members of " alligator-jaw " pattern, and a detachable member at the front of the engine.

The L1300 series incorporated a Lockheed-Bendix braking system which has been replaced in the 1230, as the new model is designated, by a Lockheed Hydrovac unit. Although smaller brake drums are fitted at the front, the total frictional area has been stepped up by 5 per cent. to 350 sq. ins. Brake drums of 14 ins, diameter are used at the front and 16 ins, at the rear. The transmission parking brake is retained.

Although the main overall dimensions of the chassis are little different, the front and rear tracks have been reduced by 1 in. and 2 ins. respectively. The new model is rated, as before, for a gross running weight of 8/ tons, but whereas the former vehicle was equipped with 9.00 by 20-in. tyres, the standard size quoted for the new model is 8.25 by 20-in. The larger size is now offered as an optional extra.

Production of this new model is scheduled to start at once.

Confirmation of the existence of a Volvo underfloor-engined passengerchassis has now been given exclusively to "The Commercial Motor," and news has been received from Sweden that Production will start early in 1952..
