You may not have heard of them, but locavores could be the next logistics challenge.
Locavores are people who only eat food produced locally, rather than as part of the international supply chain. For a locavore, it's important to eat locally produced crops, fruit and meat. It's the next logical step in the organic movement, taking food miles into account as well as environmental issues.
This group will present an increased logistics problem, but, in fact, they are a market ideally suited to the challenges of a world in which there are no goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes.
Locavores fit in neatly to our problem of milk distribution. The problem of the delivery of the daily pint without large-scale road haulage is solved if an increasing number of people are prepared to pay a premium for locally produced milk — perhaps with other local farm produce delivered to their door.
