VOLVO

FM 410 Globetrotter 4x2

Volvo arguably sticks closest to the requested specificaA The FM Globetrotter tion with its FM Globetrotter. With the low-mounted cab is arguably the best and easy entry, this is the best concept for heavy concept for heavy distribution and shortand middle-distance trips. One distribution

thing that comes with a low-mounted cab is a high doghouse, but in a segment where one does not sleep in the truck every night that is not the biggest problem.

Surprisingly, Volvo came with the 11-litre engine, the Dl 1C. This engine is also used by Renault Trucks in the Premium and the French did some nice fine-tuning.

The 405hp is there between 1,600rpm and 1,900rpm that is a wide range. Even more important is the torque of 1,950Nm from 950rpm to 1,400rpm. On paper, that gives the Volvo the best driveability. The gearbox is the I-Shift AT2412D Direct Drive. The rear axle ratio is 2.79:1.

The Volvo rated high on driving: the feeling in the steering is really good and the low cab doesn't give much movement. The feeling of the road and the ride comfort is maybe even better than in the higher FH cab. Other advantages of the low cab are the improved visibility around the truck.

Inside there is storage space above the windscreen, with optional extra storage space on the rear wall. Beneath the bunk in the test truck is a big drawer where you can put a fridge.

On both sides of the cab, there are big lockers with plenty of space for everything you don't want in the cab. The Volvo does have some disadvantages. The dashboard info display is a bit poor: the figures are small, and Volvo doesn't give much information about the setting of cruise-control or downhill mode.

Adjusting the cruise control itself could also be improved. The operation of the stalk on the left of the wheel is confusing and not easy to see.

Altogether, the FM Globetrotter is a fine truck for multi-stops. Easy entry, good visibility and a good ride come as standard. On the other side, there is the high engine tunnel, but that is to be expected with this low cab.

The question is, how many times a day do you get in and out of the truck and how many times do you go to bed?
