Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Juliet Parish • Many British truck drivers stuck in the daily motorway jam must long to be behind the wheel of a giant American truck, powering down the interstate to the sound of country music.

Now an American haulage firm is giving UK truckers the chance to fulfil their dream and work in the States for a year.

The reason, says Memphisbased MS Carriers, is that it cannot find enough experienced US drivers for its rapidly expanding fleet.

MS wants to recruit up to 200 Brits, all of whom must be over 23 and have two years of Continental driving under their belts. They must also have a hazardous freight certificate, a "stable work history" and no criminal record.

In return, the company is offering earnings of up to $32,000 dollars (around £21,000) and the right of spouses to travel in the truck too.

MS, which has a fleet of 1,800 tractive units, most of which are Freightliners, has already had enquiries from more than 700 lorry drivers. But there is a snag. Before the scheme can go ahead MS must convince the US government that the UK drivers will not be stealing US truckers' jobs.

But it says if all goes to plan it will have the British recruits on its books by next April.

Each recruit will be given their own Freightliner tractor with a Detroit Diesel engine, air ride, cruise control, walk-in sleeper, stereo cassette and a communication system with a fax.

On average they will be asked to drive 4,000km (2,500 miles) a week, with a typical one-way journey of 800km (500 miles).

If you are interested, write to the recruiting office, MS Carriers, PO Box 30788, Memphis-TN, USA 38130-0788 or ring freephone (0800) 895601.
