slackness n steering gear was "rough and ready," it was submitted to Cannock magistrates last week. Twenty charges relating to alleged defects in three 5-tonners owned by Samuel Henry Pickard,-34 Allen's Lane, Pelsall, were being heard.

Two constables said that the steered wheels had a play of 9-10 in., but Pickard stated that the play was measured when the vehiclesi,vere stationary and undue pressure was put on the steering mechanism. Mr. Brian Duffield suggested that a more satisfactory method would be to examine the steering box.

Three charges against Pickard alleging that he permitted inefficient steering were dismissed. He was fined a total of £7 on six other counts. Three drivers were fined a total of •16 10s.

ANEW order for 75 Leyland Titan double-deckers, placed with Leyland Motors, Ltd., by Corns Iompak Eireann, brings up to 215 the total number of Titans ordered within four months. The buses arc intended mainly for expanding city services in Dublin, Cork and Limerick.

The chassis, which will be of 17:1t. 6-in, wheelbase, will be shipped to Eire completely knocked-down and will be assembled in the C.I.E. workshops, where they will also be fitted with largecapaeity double-deck bodies.

ACCIDENT OFFICERS NOT WANTED

THE Minister of Transport's plan to I appoint divisional road accident officers is opposed by the County Councils' Association, who doubt the need for such appointments and regret that there was no prior consultation with themselves before the Minister's announcement. The Association wish to discuss the matter with the Minister.

The officers would advise divisional road engineers about remedying black spots and upon other safety matters.

NEW MODERN B.R.S. DEPOT

TO incorporate the reiults of research into methods of mechanical handling, a new depot is to be established on the Team Valley trading estate, Gateshead, by British Road Services. The site covers 14 acres.
