Mersey Tunnel Tolls.

At a special meeting of Liverpool City Council. held a few days ago, it was decided by an overwhelming majority to confirm the promotion of a Parliamentary Bill to confer further borrowing powers for the completion of the new Mersey Tunnel, to increase the aggregate amount of tolls which may be collected, and to extend the period of collection to 40 yeats.

Inquiry Into Bournemouth Congestion. The roads committee of Bournemouth Corporation has considered the problem of traffic congestion in the centre of the town caused by the loading and unloading of goods. The question of making regulations governing the matter is being considered by the municipal authority, in consultation with the Chamber of Trade, other interested parties and the police. In the meantime, he town clerk is obtaining information from other towns.

More Motors in Middlesex. • In the quarter ended September 80 last there were 105,569 motor vehicles registered in Middlesex, representing an increase of 6,297 over the figure obtained during a similar census last year, the principal mm-ease being in respect of private cars. The popularity of the lightweight motorcycle and of the threewheeled vehicle is reflected in the increase in these classes. Another rise is in the number of goods vehicles.

Surrey Road-scheme Suggestions.

Surrey County Council is asking the Ministry of Transport for permission to complete, at an estimated cost of £66,500, the second section of the Guildford-Oodalming by-pass.

The county council also reports tnat the congestion on the main road through Caterham is so acute that the only solution is the construction of a by-pass, and it proposes to take stops to acquire land for such a scheme.

Death of Municipal Transport Official.

The death has occurred of Mr. Isaac Brassington, a councillor on the Manchester City Council since 1921. For two years he was chairman of the transport committee, deputy chairman of the traffic congestion committee, and his membership of the electricity committee lasted from his election thereto in 1921. His chairmanship of the transport committee coincided with certain changes in the organization of the city's passenger-transport services, rind it was during his period ofoffice that oil-engined• buses were introduced, whilst the city's network of bus services assumed larger proportions.

Setigley Considering Refuse Motors. • A special meeting of the health committee of Sedgley Urban District Council is to be held further to consider the provision of mechanical haulage in the collection of house refuse. •

Britain's Longest Road Tunnel.

On Saturday last the longest road tunnel in Great Britain, at the foot of Penmaenhach, between Conway and Penmaenmawr, was opened to traffic, the opening ceremony being performed by' the chairman of Carnarvon County Council, Sir Richard Williams. The tunnel is 565 ft. long and has cost

£70,000. It cuts out certain danger spots on the old road and will ease traffic congestion considerably.
