A Brief Description of the Overland One-tonner, Which Affords 190 Cubic Feet of Space.

n-igE OVERLAND one-tonner, the

chassis of which costs £175 with battery ignition and £185 with magneto, is suitable for carrying several different type of bodies, including. a • van, tipper, light char-a-banes,. bus and hinge-sided lorry. The chassis is notable for the strength of its frame and suspension and the generous dimensions of the back axle. The latter, which is of the doublereduction type, is provided with a heavy, solid chrome-nickel steel member for carrying the load and separate shafts of 31 ins, diameter for transmitting the drive. The drive is taken through the crown wheel and differential to a pinion mounted on the drive shaft, the latter operating internal gear contained in the wheel housings. The rear brakes amo of particularly generous dimensions, the diameter of the drums being 14 ins., while the foot-operated external-contracting bands measure some 2 ins, in width. The internal-expanding shoes are controlled by hand, the link work in both cases being fully compensated.

The side members of the frame which are of deep channel section with wide flanges facing outwards, are rigidly cross-braced at the extreme rear, at two other points amidships, and again at the back of the engine.

The power unit follows standard Overland practice, the bore of the cylinders being 4 ins, and the piston stroke 4 ins.. some 30 b.h.p. being developed on an R.A.C. rating of 19.6 h.p. The principal features of the unit are a detachable head, side-by-side valves, thermo-siphon cooling, Autolite starting motor, CAN. generator, Zenith carburetter, and centrifugal pressure-feed lubrication system. Particularly neat is the manner in which the magneto is operated by means of a short, silent chain, the magneto itself being held to a platform by means of sm overhead strap, which enables the instrument to be quickly dismounted shouhi occasion arise.

The three-speed-and-reverse gear is built in one tinit with the engine, the change-speed lever being mounted centrally and controlling ratios of 6,3, 13.8, and 24.7 to 1 on the forward speeds and 33 to 1 on the reverse. The pedals controlling the brake and the single plate dutch are both adjustable whilst the gears, which are of the stub-tooth type, are made of heat-treated nickel steel, their shafts running on large annular ball bearings. An open propeller shaft, equipped with a double-thickness Hardy flexible coupling, transmits the power to the rear axle, where the torque and drive are both taken through the front half of the rear springs. The latter are of the semi-elliptic triplex type and are made of heat-treated chrome vanadium steel. Their centres, are 52 ins, apart, while their width is 3 ins. The front springs, on the other hand, are of the quarter-elliptic triplex type, measuring some 2 ins, in width and 20 ins. between the centres.

The rear steel disc wheels are shod with 32-in. by 4i-in. pneumatic tyres, while the front wheels, which are of the wooden artillery type, carry 31-in. by 4-in, non-skid pneumatics, N.A.P. tyres heing fitted if required.

The front axle is an I-section beam • formed by a single drop forging of suitable heat-treated carbon steel, and carried on Timken. roller bearings, the front -of the vehicle being practically identical with the Overland touring model.

A 16-in, diameter steering wheel is mounted on the off side, the reduction

being effected by a planetary type of gear. The hand-operated throttle -and

magneto control lavers are located on quadrants under the steering wheel, in the centre of which is a horn button.

The in.strutnent board carriesthe choke control, engine switches and lamp, While the starting switch, which is pedal oper ated, is situated on the floorboard. The equipment is very complete and includes two headlights, electrical controls, speedometer, electric horn, a full set of spares and a spare wheel for both front and back.

The total weight of the chassis is 20 cwt., the body space from the dash to the rear of the frame being 134i ins, and the width of the frame being 34i ins. The van provides 190 cubic feet of accommodation and is fitted with a threepiece screen, shelf on the instrument board, side curtains to the driving compartment and a single entrance door on the near side. Small side windows are also provided for the driver, so that the cab is more than usually well lighted. The van body appears to be well constructed, the wheel arches occupying a minimum of space.

The hinged-sided lorry also incorporates a driver's cab, provided with side curtains, that on the near aide opening with the door. In this case the floor space measures 8 ft. 4 ins. by 5 ft. 3 ins., whilst the sides and the tailboard can be removed when necessary. The hinge-sided lorry costs £220 or £230, complete with hoops and detachable waterproof covering, with two celluloid windows, magneto ignition being £10 extra in all cases.
