No decision has yet been made on exemptions or discounts for hauliers. Chris Tindall reports.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE County Council (CCC) is bidding for millions of pounds of government funding to help ease traffic jams in the city — and it plans to introduce a congestion charge.

A £500m package, designed to reduce traffic levels by 10%, will include a revamp of the city's public transport and a MondayFriday congestion charge of £3-5.

CCC leader Shona Johnstone believes a congestion charge is the only way the city can reduce the numbers of vehicles entering the city: "Doing nothing is not an option:1 do not want Lobe the person people point to in years to come as the politician who failed to get a grip on a problem everyone knew was coming.

"Our investigations have shown that congestion charging could be effective in tackling congestion when it is at its worst."

A council spokeswoman says no decision has been made yet on discounts or exemptions for hauliers: "The bid to the government presumes all motorists are included. However, we recognise there are some groups that will receive discounts and exemptions. We will work with them to understand their issues.

The council hopes to find out early next year if it has been successful in its bid for cash from the government's Transport Innovation Fund — the Department for Transport expects the fund to grow to more than £2bn by 2014/15.
