Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• CM's roadworks information this week is compiled with the aid of the Department of Transport and the AA.

Minister for Roads and Traffic. Peter BottomleY, forecasts fewer major roadworks on the motorways over the coming Bank Holiday because of the effects of the 'lane rental' scheme, encouraging contractors to finish motorway repairs early. Motorists in the Midlands are unlikely to reap any benefits, with Bank Holiday hold-ups expected on the M5. M6 and M42. Other areas to avoid are: M1 throughout Lane 3 on l}oth northbound and southbound carriageways will be closed in short lengths for emergency barrier repairs.

M1 Northamptonshire Southbound: Lane 3 will be closed for 3.2km (2 miles) north of Rothersthorpe Service Area.

Northbound: Lanes 2 and 3 will be closed for 3.2km (2 miles) north of Rothersthorpe Service Area for central reserve works. Traffic will use the hard shoulder.

Mu 1 Essex Delays continue at the Redbridge Roundabout with the construction of the South Woodford to Barking Relief Road. The northbound slip road lane is closed until October 1986. M20 Kent Work has been suspended until August 31 between junctions 7 and 8 (A20 interchange and Maidstone) to ease holiday traffic flow. Carriageway reconstruction, with contrafiow in operation, will continue until November.

M40 Oxfordshire Between Junctions 6 and 7 (B4009 and A329/Watlington) both carriageways are reduced to one lane with the westbound entry slip road closed at Junction 6 and the eastbound entry slip road dosed at Junction 7 until December 6.

M275 Hampshire Work on the new flyover construction between M27 intersection and Rudmore Roundabout, Portsmouth means carriageway width restrictions between 9.30am Fridays to 7.30am Mondays until August 30. Cross-channel and Isle of Wight ferry traffic can expect delays.

A421 Bedfordshire Carriageway restrictions are in operation at Marston until Spring 1987 because of the by-pass construction. Al Hertfordshire Diversions are in operation in Hatfield between Junction M14 and "Comet" roundabout because of motorway construction. A2 Kent Contraflow system means delays between Junction A227 (Tollgate) and 1321M9 (Cobham) while the coastalhound carriageway is resurfaced and the hard shoulder constructed. Work will continue until October.
