IN REACTION to the bans on unlicensed express coaches operating between Athens and London, a tour operator and several independent coach operators have formed a new association, reports NOEL MILLIER.
The European Coach Services Organisation, despite the extensive and sensational publicity given to two fatal accidents in Yugoslavia involving Euroways coaches en route to Greece, wants a new Ministerial inquiry into the Greek services and the incidents. The ECSO group is led by Nicholas Rogovsky of European Express, which does not operate its own coaches.
ECSO thinks that route monopolies should be taken away and licences re-offered on a competitive basis. It wants coaches to be subject to the highest standards of passenger safety and comfort and to keep strictly to the drivers' hours regulations and carry a courier.
Despite these aims. apparently none of the ECSO operators has applied for licences to operate over the Athens route covered by Wallace Arnold and its Euroways pool partners.
