freight on West German highways is being hauled by non-German carriers, says the
Institute of German Industry. From 1958 to 1962 the total business by German motor transport, companies rose by less than one-third, while the business of foreign carriers in Germany nearly trebled. Haulage by German carriers in 1962 rose by 5-1 per cent, against a rise of 23-7 per cent in the haulage of foreign vehicles.
In 1958, non-German carriers accounted for 3-5 per cent of the, total transport. :Today their share is about 85 per cent.
Institute Awards
NAR, T. G. GIBB, chairman of the 1-711 board of management and general manager of British Road Services, has been awarded £20 for his paper submitted to the Institute of Transport during its 1962-63 season. Mr. Gibb's paper was on"Problems of the road carrier in Britain today ".
An award of £10 was gained by Mr. G. J. Dickins, traffic officer (central buses). London Transport Board, for his paper on " The busman's ideal new town ".
The awards will be presented by the retiring president, Mr. E. G. Whitaker. at the inaugural meeting of the 1963-64 session of the Institute on October 14 (5.45 p.m. for 6.15 p.m.) at the Institution of Civil Engineers, Great George Street, London, S.W.1.
