Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An Ingenious Fowler Vehicle Which Saves Labour and Works More Expeditiously.

THE ILLUSTRATIONS on this page are of an ingenious machine which has just been put into service by Norman E. Box, Ltd., of Manchester, for road making. It performs five operations: tar-spraying, gritting, grouting,. sweeping, and rolling, and is specially useful in making tar-macadam roads. The machine, which is a 10-tonner, is one of Fowler-Woods patents, and its advantage lies in the fact that the roller, tar-sprayer, gritter, And brush are all embodied in the one machine, thus forming an economical and convenient arrangement. The revolving brush does away with manual labour for the purpose of clearing the road of dust and loose material. The tar-sprayers are immediately in front. of the brush, and after the liquid has been squirted on the road the patent gritter distributes the grit or other material required immediately. This is then rolled, leaving the road in excellent condition.

The machine hasbeen in operation barely a month, and during this period it has sprayed over 100.000 sq. yds. of road. With six men, 12,000 to 14,000

sq. yds. of road cam be " tar-macadarned " in a day. If the spraying and gritting had been done by hand.and the rolling by steam roller, 12 men would have been -required to do 6,000 to 7,000 sq. yds. per day.

At Liverpool, Messrs. Box'smachines are repairing extensive stretches of road for the corporation, and our illustrations show the sprayer and a rubber-tyred traction engine, the latter being employed in drawing the grit trailers. between the roadside stores and the scene of operations.
