THE ROAD Haulage Association's annual conference in Spain in November will register two "firsts." It will be the first to be held abroad. It will also be the first to be "supported" by a specific vehicle manufacturer. Leyland Vehicles, the sponsor, will be associated with the conference for several years and will reinforce the commercial policy which the RHA began after the appointment of Maj-Gen Freddie Plaskett as chief of staff.

Robin Woolcock, Leyland's UK operations director, is cock-ahoop. "Several of our Continental competitors would have given their right arm for this superb opportunity," he said. But I can remember a time when Leyland was less than enthusiastic about appearing at the RHA tipper convention at Blackpool and was severely mauled by members.

Relations are now quite different, as figures issued by the SMMT surely demonstrate. Registrations of Leyland goods vehicles in the first quarter rose from 1,267 last year to 2,106 this year and made a remarkable spurt from 471 in March, 1982, to 1,068 this year. Leyland Vehicles is clearly delivering the goods to those who deliver the goods.
