MULTIPLIERS for determining the gross weigth of vehicles solely for driver licensing purposes are contained in new regulations coming into operation on May 5. The Goods Vehicles (Ascertainment of Maximum Gross Weights) Regulations 1976 costs 12p from HMSO or through any bookseller.
To establish the gross vehicle weight for the minimum age requirement now relevant to driving licences, in general, heavy motor cars first used before January 1, 1968, and locomotives or motor tractors first used before April 1, 1973, must have their unladen weight multiplied by 2 for this purpose. Motor cars must have their unladen weight multiplied by 4.
The unladen weight of the type of trailers usually used with articulated vehicles is multipliable by 3 and the usual type of articulated combination has a multiple of 2.5 applicable to its unladen weight.
