Your account of publicity on The Budget is not altogether fair to the national press, although it is true that some of them did not immediately see the significance of the increase of 7ip a gallon in the tax on derv, peehaps because they confused it with the similar tax increase on petrol which the Chancellor pointed out would mean that the ordinary motorist would only have to pay an extra Ip.
The Road Haulage Association's immediate reaction was certainly reported the morning after the Budget in The Times, Financial Times, Daily Express and Daily Mail. The press notice which you quote was sent out to assist, the remaining media and was emphasised in other ways including a speech towards the end of Budget week by an RHA vice-chairman, Mr Jack Male.
As a consequence the Association's views were reported, for example, on the front page of the Daily Mirror and on BBC 1 television News. Another BRA vice-chairman, Mr John Silbermann, was heard on the Radio 4 Today programme on April 13, a week after the Budget.
