Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

the Army to obtain a Class I hgv drivinglicence and drive vehicles of this class before they reach the age of 21. Is this correct and if so why is it allowed?

AThere is a concession that allows drivers

in the Services, not solely the Army, to be trained for and obtain a Class I hgv driving licence before reaching 21. This licence enables such drivers, who must of course be at least 17 to hold any driving licence, to drive any type of vehicle used by the Services.

The reason for this concession is to enable the Services to make the best use of all available manpower and to maintain strategic advantage by having all drivers qualified to drive all types of vehicle.

The concession does not continue to apply should a qualified Class I driver leave the Service before attaining the age of 21. In these circumstances he would be in the same position as any civilian driver under 21, namely restricted to driving vehicles of Class 4 and 4A and light vehicles which do not come within the scope of hgv driving licensing. Such a driver would, however, be able to claim a Class licence on reaching 21 by virtue of having gained the qualification to drive vehicles covered by this class while in the Services.
