Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

from a special correspondent • Materials handling was one of the themes at this year's International Fair at Bilbao, Spain, at which more than 400 firms showed their products. Among several items of interest in the handling field was a dump truck, assembled in Bilbao from components bought in, the engine—a Pegaso 9105 /11 giving 200 bhp at 2000 rpm—being the only Spanish-made feature.

The dump truck has a monodisc dry-type clutch, connected to a Spicer gearbox, type 6352, with five speeds. The front and rear axles are Rockwell, and the differential is also a Rockwell model T-138. The steering is hydraulically assisted, and built by Ross model HP-70. A Heil body with a capacity of 11 cubic metres is fitted. Total weight of the vehicle unladen is 12.3 tonnes, and permitted load is 13.7 tonnes, giving a total weight loaded of 26 tonnes, which is permitted by Spanish regulations on public roads; although obviously on public works this can be exceeded. The constructors of the vehicle are Tomas Mintegui Uriguen. A German firm, Klaus, showed its container lifting equipment, in conjunction with the Spanish branch of Fruehauf. This equipment can be fitted on any vehicle, or Klaus can supply special trailers. The equipment provides a lift capacity of from 13 tons to 30 tons. The type 287 sideloader is fully independent, with four hydraulic legs, double link, which give complete stability. Containers between 20 and 40ft long can be handled, as the two loading units slide along the length of the chassis by means of an electro-hydraulic motor.

This unit can be used for off-loading on both sides, also for moving a container on one side on another vehicle to another container vehicle on the other side. It can also serve as a depot mobile crane to stack containers two high.

A specially designed semi-trailer is required for the 22 and 30 tons lifting capacity for these Kranmobils, and the Klaus company provide such a trailer with automatic steering road axles. However, any three-axle truck of 22to 26-ton load capacity, equipped with a standard fifthwheel plate and hydraulic power supply pump, can be used with the Kranmobil semi-trailers.

This system has obvious advantages, and the latest development by the firm is to apply the same system to brick loading. This means that between five and eight cubic yard lifts are possible in one operation, with no previous preparation, and no special base required.

Another vehicle worthy of mention was the Baumann side-lifter, which works on the same principle as the fork-lift truck, but can be used to carry loads a distance. The hydraulic lift moves outwards from a central position to lift the load, then returns to the body height, so that another load can be lifted and stacked alongside. This is manu

factured in six models, with lifting capacities between 3 and 4 tonnes. Greatest lift height is 4 metres; vehicle widths 1.86 to 2.15 metres; turning circle radius is between 3.95 and 4.36 metres. It is fitted with Perkins type D3.152 or 4.236 diesel engines. ,

Several mobile cranes were shown, including a Jones model, with very long extending boom. The Hydraulic crane is manufactured in Vitoria by IBESA, and can be supplied in a number of different lifting capaeities from small loads to 55 tons. It has a road speed of 56 kph.
