THE ROAD HAULAGE Association (RHA) has warned that the adoption of longer semitrailers (LSTs) for 18m artics would not have the effect on the road transport industry's combined carbon emissions that have been predicted.

RHA director of policy Jack Semple tells CM it is more important for the industry to make better use of existing capacity, and that there is more carbon reduction to be had through pure supply chain efficiency than investing in LHVs. "Some members are supportive [of 18m artics]," Semple says, "but they question the carbon gain. They feel better use could be made of existing dimensions."

The Freight Transport Association has called on the Department for Transport to allow on-the-road trials of artics up to 18m in the UK, saying they need to he sold "in terms of their carbon reduction".
