Haulier rages that truck thief punishment is 'too Lenient'

WORCESTERSHIRE-based Troughton Transport says the six-month sentencing of a compulsive HGV thief is too lenient.

Worcester Magistrates' Court heard on 30 September that a thief who stole a 210,000 DAF truck and a 210000 load from Troughton's yard in Evesham had committed more than 300 offences since 1977.

Nicholas Attwell, 48, from Christchurch, Dorset, pleaded guilty to stealing the truck from Four Pools Industrial Estate between 10pm on 19 September and 10am the following morning, and dumping it in Wareham, Dorset. On 18 September, he also stole a coach from Wellington, abandoning it near Troughton's site.

A Troughton spokesman says: "The punishment does not act as much of a deterrent to criminals, and we believe the sentencing was too lenient. What example does this set for how seriously crime is taken in haulage?'

The court heard that Attwell "has a lot of fun driving other people's vehicles". It emerged that over the past 32 years he has committed more than 300 offences, mostly vehicle related. He was sentenced to three months in jail for taking the two vehicles and three months concurrent for driving while djsqualjfied.

He also received a £400 fine for driving without insurance and a fouryear driving ban.
