recommended by the MAIB report to provide guidance to shippers on the additional securing of cargo on trailers that are being moved by sea.

Andy Mair, head of engineering policy at the FTA, says it needs to highlightthe problem of vehicles boarding ferries with the incorrect number of lashing points. He reveals: "We need to raise with members this lashing requirement to secure those vessels. The general guidelines for all the ferry operators is that it's down to them that vehicles being loaded have adequate lashings. Obviously, if vehicles are going onto ferries with incorrect lashing, it's not being enforced very well. All we can do is raise operators' awareness."

Road Haulage Association head of international affairs Peter Cullum says it has always recommended operators fit securing rings to their trailers, but it will be providing additional guidance to ferry companies.

But he adds: "Most of it is stuff they know. This was an individual case, rather than a systemic problem. When there's not clear guidance by ferry staff, that's when things slip down the cracks."
