CM COVER STORY By Justin Stanton RIVALS THAT tender at suicidal rates is the issue that concerns most operators. Of those who responded to the most recent Trucking Britain Out Of Recession (TBOOR)survey,72% highlighted suicidal rates as a concern.

Indeed, 78% of respondents said they had lost business to rivals' suicidal tenders.

Other widespread fears are: customers collapsing, creating bad debts — 64%; and late payments from customers — 56%.

The inability to obtain credit is an issue for 24% of the respondents to the survey. Meanwhile, one of the main concerns for clients. in the opinion of 55% of operators, is cost; just 2% said environmental impact was their clients' major concern.

Asked how il feels to work in road transport at the moment, operators replied: • Uncertain — 49% • Stressed — 37% • Demoralised — 33% • Hopeful — 30% • Worried — 29% • Busy — 27% Just 6% felt appreciated. while only 3% felt rewarded (more than one answer was permitted).

However, confidence levels were high: 26% of respondents said their firms have already started to recover from the recession, while 50% expect to recover within the next 12 months; and 89% are confident their businesses will survive the recession.

Asked if they would recommend a career in transport to a son or daughter, just 27% of the survey's respondents said 'yes: The TBOOR survey is being supported by Motor Transport, Truck&Driver, TruckNett K and Roadtransport.com.

It is also being backed by the Road Haulage Association, DAF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Michelin, Renault Trucks. Scania and Volvo.
