Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

At 1 0 litres: Mack engineers are jointly working on a new uprated version of the six-cyl der 10-litre Renault engine (used in the Premium Distribution) called the E5, which will deli. power outputs of over 400hp. Homcha says: 'With full electronics the E5 will go up to the m 400hp. Our general rule of thumb is 40hp per litre so 450hp isn't easy, but it's achievable." addition to electronically controlled fuel injection it will also have a 24-valve head. However 450hp E5 is still a few years away, insists Homcha.

At 1 2 litres: With the Mack E7 already a key part of RVI's global engine strategy, Homcha is talking about taking it above its current 470hp top rating. "With our 12-litre we plan to crest 500hp," he says. "We feel very confident that the future won't be with a 14 or 15-litre engine (see E9 story opposite). The market is down to the 12 and 13litre class. The 12-litre is the future area for us." The latest E-Tech unit pump versions are due to arrive in Europe later this year or early in 1999.

On future fuel systems: The E7's electronic unit pump fuel system will take Mack beyc Euro-3. But to meet tighter emission standards, injection pressures will go higher. "The m value lies in a flexible injection system," says Homcha. 'We see early injection needed to the fire burning, before going _to Full injection, then tapering off. When we chose unit pump: 1995 common-rail wasn't sufficiently advanced. However, common-rail has the greatest fit bility and switching to it would be reasonably straightforward."
