Strongly recommended to all engineers — the newly released Perkins film Man the Inventor. The diary of the diesel engine, it's well produced and a credit to the technical advisor, Joe Hind, Perkins's md.
Names like Carl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, Rudolph Diesel, Akroyd, Stuart, Cummins, Street, Ricardo and many others roll off the narrator's tongue. The film traces the development of the engine from the non-rotating steam job of 17 something up to today's compact, powerful "oiler".
At the press preview in London, normally reserved journalists from the technical and trade press were loud in their praise — all except one, our man. Yes, it's true: there he was sitting quietly with his plate of buffet lunch and a glass of something, basking in the reflected glory of those who had gone before.
You see, all through the film, when the director wanted to make an authoritative and unbiased point he had used an enlargement of CM's pages from about 1907 to date. There's no doubt about it, it's a well made film.
