'THE Thatcham depot of _British Road I. Services, which, together with 85 vehicles and 20 trailers, was recently sold to Cropper and Co., Ltd„ carton manufacturers. Thateham, Berks (The Commercial Motor, October 8), will continue to run as in the past.

A new company is to be formed by Cropper and CO.. Ltd., and T.R.T.S., Ltd., owners of the business -before it was taken over by the British Transport Commission. Although details of the new company have not yet been announced, it is understood that Mr. S. J. Ashman, a director of T.R.T.S., will be a member of the board, and will play a big part in running its affairs.

NEW B.T.C. COMPANY

A SECOND company has been regisrA tered by the British Transport Commission to facilitate denationalization. Known as N.M.U. (1954), Ltd., it has a nominal capital of £100. The initials that form the title are similar to those of Northern Motor Utilities. Ltd., who are well remembered as longdistance hauliers.

It is understood that the B.T.C. are now negotiating with.a prospective purchaser for the sale of .a block of Toad haulage property. If agreement is reached, the property will be passed to N.M.U. which will then be sold as a going concern.

Earlier this year, the Commission formed B.R.S. (Parcels), Ltd. This was done for administrative convenience and with the ultimate object of selling the parcels organization.

MORE GOODS BY ROAD THE quantity of goods carried by 1 road is more than' three times the quantity moved by the railways, according to figures compiled . by the Central Statistical Office and published this week in the Annual Abstract of Statistics, No. 911954 (Stationery Office, 21s.).

A sample inquiry conducted during a week in September, 1952, showed that the tonnage carried by road was estimated at 904m, in the year. During the same period, goods carried by rail

amounted to 285m. tons. • • In 1952, the nurribet of goods vehicles on the roads had grown to 1,004.278— double the 1938 total.. The total number of vehicles in 1953 'was 51m.; against 3m. in 1938.

In 1952-1953, the total expenditure on the roads waS £86,028,000, against £58,284,000 during the year ended March 31, 1939.
