MAJOR. R. S. GRIGG, the chairman and founder of the Car Mart, Ltd.; Dagenham Motors, Ltd., and associated companies, died suddenly one day last week. • • • Mn. H. T. VANE, once a well-known personality in the motor' industry, died Suddenly on October 9; at the age of 68 years. From 1904 to 1912 he was secretary and general manager to S, F. Edge, and became managing director to D. • Napier and Son, Ltd., in 1913, retiring in 1932.

" MR. HARRY S. CARR, who was commercial-vehicle sales manager at the depot of University Motors, Ltd., at Lots Road, London, S.W., died a few days ago. He. was welt known in the conimercia14.vehicle sales world for 40 yehrs, and for 30 years was closely connected with the.sale of Dodge vehicles in the London area.

MR. W. U. J. SPENCE, whose death we regret to record, was contracts manager of Park Royal COachworks, Ltd. He joined that 'company in March, 1933, prior to which he was with Messrs. Grose's, of Northampton. He had been connected with the transport industry for many years and was well known in the trade.

News of the death, in London., on October 14, at the age of 64, of Mr. 0, C. "PowER, J.P., M.Ins-r.T., director and traffic manager of the Birmingham. and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., will have come as a great shock to his numerous friends and colleagues.

Born in Birmingham, " 0.C.P.," as he was known to his friends, was first appointed to the staff of the United States Consulate in that city, later becoming private secretary to the Consul.

In September, 1899, he became local secretary of the Birmingham General

Omnibus Company, being appointed by the late Mr, Emile Garcke. He became traffic manager.when the company possessed 12 stables and some 500 horses. At present, the Midland "Red" undertaking owns 1,400 buses and coaches, with an annual re.venue of over £4,000000, covers 50,000,000 miles per year, and carries '800,000,000 passengers.

Between 1902-3, Birmingham Corporation decided to take over the tramways, and the horsed-bus services of the General Omnibus and City Tram-• ways undertakings were merged in the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd.'

Mr. Power had a great liking for holidays abroad,. and at the end of July, 1914, he was in Germany, but escaped in time In addition to his position with the Midland "Red," fie was a J.P. of the city: and an active member of many bodies connected with road transport, roads, the R.S.P.C.A., etc., and a member of the National Passenger Sectional Board of the C.M.U.A. He was chairman of Black and White Motorways, Ltd., and director of Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd., Potteries Motor Traction Co., Ltd., Leamington and Warwick Transport Co., Ltd.,Stratford-on-Avon Blue -Motors, Ltd., and several other undertakings. He was also a keen Rotarian.

Road transport in the Midlands and throughout the country owes much to his extensive knowledge, freely given advice and exceptional organizing ability.

MR, SAM WEBSTER, who was a pioneer of the road-transport industry in Sheffield, recently .died at the age of 80 years. He continued his business activities with R. Hoolsham, Ltd., Attercliffe Road, Sheffield, and Direct Motor Service (Sheffield), Ltd., up to the time of his death. He had been chairman of the latter company since its formation in 1923, and was hon. treasurer of the Sheffield District Horse and Motor Owners' Association, now the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Hauliers' Association.

We much regret to learn of the death, which occurred on October5, at , the age of 65, of MR, EDWARD GENNA, of Tettenhall, Wolverhamp

ton. He was for nearly 40 years a well-known figure in the motor industry, particularly well known, through his long _association with the Sunbeam concern,, dating back to 1899. When the first car to bear that. name was produced. When the Sunbeam Motor. .Car Co., Ltd., was formed in 1905 he became the first sales, manager. In 1917 he was appointed sales manager to Guy Motors, Ltd.,. afterwards heading a similar position with the' Star Engineering Co., Ltd. He. rejoined the Sunbeam Company in 1.932 as, sales -. manager until the interests of the coinpariy were acquired by R•ootes Securities, Ltd. His kindly, unassuming. Manner brought him a host of friends.
